Ciao Manjari! Raccontaci qualcosa di te, di dove sei e dove vivi ora?
Hello Manjari! Tell us a little bit about yourself, where do you live and where are you from?
Ho vissuto negli Stati Uniti per dieci anni. Vivo nel quartiere di Brooklyn a New York, ma sono nata e cresciuta a Mumbai in India. Torno a casa spesso, considero New York la mia casa tanto quanto Mumbai. Amo cucinare e mangiare, e ancora di più fare domande.
I’ve been in the USA for a decade. I live in Brooklyn, New York, but I was born and raised in Mumbai, India. I go back home pretty often, though, home is now just as much New York as it is Mumbai. I love to cook and eat and I mostly love to ask questions.
Quali artisti hanno avuto maggiore influenza nella tua “crescita” creativa? Ci parli del tuo primo soggetto?
What were your early creative influences and your first subject?
Sono sempre stata fan di Irving Penn, Anna Gaskell e Satyajit Ray. Ho la sensazione che tutti e tre abbiano avuto una grande influenza nelle mie fotografie. Il mio primo soggetto fu Katelyn, in quel periodo studiava teatro, le chiesi di fare una doccia nel mio bagno, non le fu concesso di rifiutarsi.
I’ve always been a fan of Irving Penn, Anna Gaskall, Satyajit Ray. I suspect all of them were equally important early influencers of my series. My first subject was Katelyn, who was studying theatre at the time and I asked her if she would come take a shower in my shower and she obliged.
Io adoro “The Shower Series”, trattandosi di scatti realizzati in una doccia, devo chiederti quanto è importante il soggetto che ritrai e la location che scegli. In che modo questi elementi ti danno ispirazione?
I love “The Shower Series”, how important are people and the location of your shoot. Which mix of this give you inspiration?
La location è molto importante. Trattandosi della mia doccia, durante gli scatti, ero l’unica a sentirmi a mio agio, il soggetto in quel momento era la figura più vulnerabile. Il contesto ha reso l’esperienza più sincera e “cruda” proprio perché la persona si trovava in un territorio inesplorato. L’ispirazione è nata dal mix tra l’ambiente e la conversazione che abbiamo avuto.
The location was very important. It being my shower, I was the one that was comfortable with the space and the subject was the vulnerable one. This allowed for it to be a more raw and honest experience because the person was in uncharted territory. The conversation and the space was the mix that caused the inspiration.

Recommend us four images from your work. Would you tell us about one of these images?
Ho scelto quattro fotografie. Posso dirti qualcosa in più riguardo l’immagine in cui Anastasia è sdraiata sull’erba. Per questi scatti eravamo andati in una spiaggia e in quel momento c’era bassa marea, l’acqua si allontanava lasciando l’erba riversa. Ricordo il processo fotografico, quando abbiamo posato l’erba sul corpo di Anastasia è nata la foto.
I have added four images that are close to me from my work below. I can tell you a bit more about the image where Anastasia lays on the grass. In this image, we went to a beach that had a really low tide so all the water had receded leaving behind this combed over grass. I still remember the process, when we laid the grass across her body and a picture was born, I really enjoyed.
Quanto è importante la luce nei tuoi lavori?
How important is the light in your work?
La luce è di vitale importanza nel progetto “The Shower Series”, e direi in tutti i lavori. Penso che il modo d’illuminare o il tipo di luce da cui si è attratti definiscano lo stile di una persona. Spesso la luce è ciò che mi attrae verso un determinato soggetto ma non è tutto. Ogni immagine è la massima espressione di luce, storia e concetto rappresentati dall’artista in modo assolutamente unico.
I think light is tremendously important to my shower work or any work. I think a way of lighting or the type of lighting that one is drawn to often defines a person’s style. Often light is what draws me into a certain subject matter but that is not all that sustains it. The story and the concept are the real drivers. Eventually, of course, every image is a culmination of all of those factors that come together in your own unique way.

Tell us about your style.
Il mio stile evolve insieme a me. Non penso che ci si debba sentire legati a un unico modo di fotografare. Le tue esperienze e i tuoi interessi crescono e si evolvono insieme a te. Penso che ogni artista abbia la responsabilità di essere sincero con sé stesso, e da questa sincerità emerge il suo stile.
My style evolves with me. I don’t think it’s mandatory to feel tied down to only shooting in one way or treatment for the rest of your life. As an artist your experience and interests grow as you do. Subject matter wise though I have always been drawn to portraiture. I think every artists first responsibility is to be true to themselves, and a style emerges from that honesty.

Vorrei consigliarti “Gravity”, se vuoi guardare qualcosa di nuovo, è una vera esperienza sensoriale. Oppure un film con qualche anno in più, “In the mood for love” di Wong Kar Wai, un capolavoro. Un artista che mi ha ispirato, potrebbe essere Edward Hopper, e un fotografo, Jeff Bark.
I would really recommend watching “Gravity” if you want to see something new and in the movie theatres currently, beautiful light. It’s a sensory experience. If you are looking for something old and timeless, I would watch “In the mood for love” by Wong Kar Wai. It’s a masterpiece. One artist that inspired me would be Edward Hopper and one photographer that inspired me would be Jeff Bark.
