Direi che potrei descrivere me stessa come un’illustratrice amante di carne e caffé che vive a Londra. Acquerelli, matite e penne, bistecche dalla cottura media, un appartamento imbiancato, attrezzi per illustratori/photoshoppisti e delle Dr.Martens numero 37 – questo è più o meno quello che sono e quello di cui è fatta la mia vita. Ah, e anche di gatti e giochi d’arte, perché è quello che faccio per guadagnarmi da vivere (i giochi d’arte, intendo).
I guess I could describe myself as a meat and coffee-loving illustrator living in London. Watercolor, pencils ‘n’ pens, medium-rare steaks, flat whites, Illustrator/Photoshop stuff and size 4 dr.Martens – that’s pretty much what I am and what my life’s made of. Oh, and also of cats and games art, because that’s what I do for a living (games art, I mean).

How did you start drawing?
Asilo nido e pittura a guazzo (avevo più o meno 4 anni) – è praticamente tutto quello che ricordo. Sono stata la prima a disegnare i tronchi degli alberi con una forma più simile a un cono che a un rettangolo, e ne ero parecchio soddisfatta!
Nursery and gouache (I was about 4) – that’s pretty much as far as I can remember. I was the first one to start drawing the trees with their trunks looking more like cones rather than rectangles, and was pretty proud of it!

Mi piacciono le mattine dei giorni feriali, intorno alle 9 o alle 10. Più o meno è questa l’ora in cui esco dalla mia tana e mi ritrovo in un delizioso bar, chiacchiero con i ragazzi che ci lavorano e mi preparano il miglior caffè della città. Poi cammino lentamente fino a lavoro bevendo il mio caffè e pensando alla mia vita. Quando arrivo in studio sono una persona completamente nuova e felice, pronta a creare nuovi giochi fichissimi.
I like weekday mornings, around 9-10 am. This is when I get off the tube and pop into a lovely coffee shop where I have a chat with the guys who work there and they make me the best coffee in town. Then I slowly walk to work drinking my coffee and thinking about life. When I come to the studio, I’m a completely new happy person, all ready to make cool gamey stuff.

Imagine a blank page, how would you start your work?
Inizierei chiudendo gli occhi e immaginando come potrebbe apparire il disegno alla fine. Poi semplicemente copio quello che la mente mi ha mostrato su un pezzo di carta.
With closing my eyes and trying to imagine what the final drawing should look like. Then I just copy what my brain showed me onto a piece of paper.
Solitamente disegni prima su carta oppure elabori tutto direttamente su pc?
do you usually draw on paper or you just use your computer?
Il più delle volte inizio con uno schizzo su carta e finisco con il realizzare il disegno digitalmente, ma qualche volta resta solo su carta. Non tutto ha bisogno di photoshop!
Most of the times it starts with a paper sketch and ends with digital editing, but sometimes it just stays on paper. Not everything needs Photoshop.

Il colore può portare un disegno ad un livello completamente nuovo, ma può anche distrarre l’osservatore dal concetto espresso dietro quel lavoro e aggiungere senza motivo tensioni all’occhio. È come stagionare il cibo: le spezie rendono il pasto più eccitante, ma a volte il sapore naturale del cibo è buono abbastanza senza dover caricarlo con quantità industriali di schifose spezie cinesi che rovinerebbero solo l’esperienza. Restiamo sul semplice.
Colour can bring an illustration to the whole new level, but can also distract the viewer from the concept behind the piece and add unnecessary tension for the eyes. It’s like seasoning the food: spices can make a meal exciting, but sometimes the natural flavour of food is good enough on its own and adding shit loads of chinese five spice could only ruin the experience. Keep it simple.
