A me i dipinti di Dustin Myers piacciono parecchio. Non solo perché sono colorati e divertenti, ma perché sono disseminati di simboli che ti accendo delle lampadine in testa come se decifrassi un rebus. Ma siccome forse sono io che faccio lavorare un po’ troppo il cervello ho pensato di scrivergli e sentire un po’ che tipo è e che gli passa per la testa. Poi fatemi sapere se anche voi ci leggete qualcosa.
Anzitutto vorrei sapere brevemente: chi sei? Cosa fai? Da quanto tempo lo fai? Cosa ti ha spinto a farlo?
First of all I want synthetically to know: who are you? what do you do? how long you have been doing it? What prompted you to do it?
Mi chiamo Dustin Myers. Dipingo da quando sono piccolo. Ho preso la pittura molto piu seriamente nel corso degli ultimi 5 anni, da quando ho iniziato ad esporre in galleria. Sono ancora un ragazzino quando dipingo, però sono diventato un ragazzino che prende la sua fantasia molto piu seriamente. Sarò sempre un bambino, indipendentemente da quanti anni ho. Partecipare a qualsiasi atto creativo mantiene la mente e il pensiero freschi come quello di un bambino. Nel mio caso ho scelto la pittura per connettarmi a quello stato mentale. Questo mi permette di vedere il mondo costantemente sotto una nuova prospettiva e seguire in posti lontani il mio stupere . Se non fai giocare la tua mente, allora stai prendendo la vita troppo sul serio.
My name is Dustin Myers. I have been painting every since I was a kid. I have been taking painting a lot more serious over the past 5 years, since I started to first do gallery shows. I am still a kid when I paint, but I have become a kid that takes his imagination a little more seriously. I will always be a kid regardless of how old I am. Participating in any creative act keeps your mind fresh and thinking like a child. In my case, I choose painting to connect with that state of mind. This allows me to constantly see the world brand new and follow my wonder and awe to far off places. If you do not let your mind play, then you are taking life too seriously.
Il pop surrealismo ed il movimento lowbrow cosa rappresentano per te?
What does pop surrealism and lowbrow movement mean for you?
Penso che tanti grandi artisti in questo movimento non etichettino la loro arte come “surrealismo pop” o “lowbrow”. La maggioranza di loro, fanno pitture fuori di testa, strane, sconvolgenti che fondono la loro immaginazione con il mondo reale. Pertanto succede che c’é una categoria per mettere tutti questi “disadattati” quando nessun altro movimento li vuole nel loro “club”.
I think a lot of the amazing artists in this movement don’t label their art as “pop surrealism” or “lowbrow”. Most of these artists just do fucked up, weird, amazing paintings that blend their imagination with the real world. It just so happens there is a category to put all these misfits when no other movement let them in their club.
Puoi dirci quali sono i tuoi strumenti di lavoro e come procedi tecnicamente?
Can you tell us which are you work tools and how you technically proceed?
Principalmente uso colori ad olio e lavoro con una variazione della tecnica di pittura fiamminga (Flemish). Questa tecnica è molto elaborata e di solito ci vogliono circa 6-7 strati di pittura ad olio. E’ simile a quella che utilizzavano gli antichi maestri, però l’ho cambiata leggermente usando materiali più moderni. L’intera tecnica si fonda su una traccia sotto pittura. Una traccia sotto pittura è praticamente uno studio monocromatico (di bianchi) su come sarà la pittura finale. È qua onestamente dove spendo la maggior parte del mio tempo durante il dipinto. Una volta fatta la sotto pittura, lavoro applicando strati di smalti colorati. Il risultato è un dipinto che splende come una gemma e dà una sensazione molto 3D. I primarily use oil paint and work with a variation of the Flemish painting technique. This technique is very labor intensive and usually is done with about 6-7 layers of oil paint. This is similar to the technique that the old masters used, but I have changed it around slightly to work with modern materials. The whole technique relies on a very well mapped out under painting. An under painting is basically a monochromatic value study of what the final painting is going to be. This is honestly where I spend a majority of my time during the painting. Then after my under painting is achieved, I will then work with transparent oil paints and glaze many layers of color. This results in a painting that looks like a gem and feels very 3-D. Personally, the symbolism in your works makes me mad. Where your imagination get it?
Il simbolismo dei miei lavori ha la funzione di raccontare una storia che tutti noi attraversiamo. Questi simboli sono tutti insieme nella testa degli spettatori e li aiutano a dare un senso al messaggio. L’arte che creo è dentro la mente degli osservatori quando cercano di interpretare ciò che la mia pittura comunica loro. Questi simboli aiutano ad assumere uno sguardo introspettivo che a volte può essere difficile da adottare. Se riesco a pensare a delle idee universali e metterle in un dipinto per mezzo di simboli, riesco a dare all’osservatore del quadro la possibilità di seguirmi lungo il percorso che ho creato. Cerco di tracciare una strada che percorreranno da soli all’interno della loro mente, il simbolismo mi aiuta a raggiungere questo obiettivo.
The symbolism in my work helps me to tell a story that we all go through. These symbols are put together in the viewers’ head and helps to make sense of what the message is. The art that I create is inside the head of the viewer when they are trying to make sense of what my painting is trying to tell them. These symbols help direct the viewer in an inward direction that may sometimes be difficult to think about. If I am able to think about these universal ideas and put them into a painting with symbols, then it gives the viewer of the painting a chance to follow me along the path that I created. I try to make this path a path that they will create for themselves inside of their own mind, and symbolism helps me to achieve this.
Da dove prendi l’ispirazione per un’opera d’arte? Come nasce l’idea?
How you get inspired for an artwork? How you give birth an idea?
L’ispirazione viene dal vivere la vita con gli occhi ben aperti. Se hai gli occhi aperti, allora il mondo intero è un miracolo. Quando inizi a chiudere gli occhi e a dimenticare che sei vivo, il mondo diventa bianco e nero. Io mi godo tutti i colori della mia vita. L’ispirazione è anche il risultato di una crescita. Sono sempre stato alla ricerca di me stesso e di cosa significhi essere vivo . Questo tipo di domande mi sono sempre girate in testa e so che girano nella testa di tutti. La maggioranza delle presone però spesso non si dà pena di trovare delle risposte. Gli basta quella che ottengono da qualcun altro. A me è sempre interessato indagare questi problemi da solo. Da piccolo pensavo che ero l’unico essere umano vivo e che tutti gli altri erano robot. Così mi sono forzato a scoprire da solo cosa significasse essere vivo invece di affidarmi a qualcun altro che mi dicesse come avrei dovuto sentirmi. Le idee per i dipinti vengono da questo percorso di conoscenza su cosa significhi essere vivi. Creo disegni come se fossero cartoline dei posti dove sono stato lungo il mio percorso e se qualcuno volesse leggere queste cartoline, forse li potrebbe aiutare a pensare che anche loro non sono gli unici a sentirsi gli ultimi umani in un mondo di robot.
Inspiration comes with living life with your eyes wide open. If you have your eyes open, then the whole world is a miracle. It is once you start to close your eyes and forget that you are alive that the world turns to black and white. I enjoy a lot of color in my life. Inspiration is also the result of growth. I have always been search for who I am, and what it means to be alive. These sort of questions have always been in the back of my mind and I know they are in the back of everyone’s mind. All too often though, most people will not venture out to figure out these questions for themselves. They will just accept the answer that they get from someone else. I have always been interested in investigating these problems myself because I never trusted what other people told me. When I was younger I thought that I was the only person alive and everyone else were robots. This would force me to find out for myself what it meant to be alive instead of relying on someone else telling me how I should feel. The ideas for paintings come from this path of understanding what it means to be alive. I just create drawings like they are postcards from places that I have been along my path, and if someone wants to read those postcards, maybe it will help them to realize that they are not the only who thinks that they are the only one alive.
So che ami la mitologia. Quale è il tuo mito preferito e in che modo ti ha influenzato?
I know you’re in love with mythology. What is your favorite myth and in which way it influenced you?
La mitologia è come una religone per me. È ciò su cui si basano tutte le religioni. Il concetto di mito è una storia che ti aiuta metaforicamente a capire come funziona l’universo. Questa è la cosa piu importanti che serve a tutti, ma ancora non sanno come farlo accadere, così si rovolgono alla religione. È dificile essere mortale, i miti sono qui per aiutarci a venire a patti con la realtà che viviamo invece di mascherare i dolori della vita e darci false speranze. Tutte le religioni possono essere lette e interpretate metaforicamente come un mito, ma uno dei pricipali problemi con la religione è che viene interpretata solo superficialmente e la “sostanza” del mito, che esiste sotto la superfice, è completamente dimenticata.
La mia leggenda preferita è quella del minotauro. Il mito parla di un re (Minosse) che per vincere una scommesa con i suoi fratelli chiese al cielo un bellissimo toro. Poseidone, dio del mare, esaudì il suo desiderio. Il re vinse la scommessa, ma invece di sacrificare quel bel toro in onore di Poseidone come aveva promesso, lo tenne per sé facendo prevalere il suo ego. Poseidone non gradì questo gesto e fece innamorare del toro la moglie di Minosse. Il minotauro, che è metà toro e metà uomo, nasce come risultato dei desideri egoistici del re. Questo minotauro viene poi imprigionato all’interno di un labirinto. Non voglio continuiare a raccontare il mito perché ci sono versioni migliori che si possono leggere. Io ho letto la versione di Joseph Campbell, che consiglio vivamente.
Molti miti hanno a che fare con la separazione dall’ego. Separarsi dall’ego è un processo difficile da attraversare. E’ il proceso in cui la mente inizia a identificare il “sé” con la natura in contrapposizione a l’ego individuale che è separato dalla natura. Il minotauro è una rappresentazione dell’ ego che deve essere ucciso per lasciare brillare la tua vera identità. Come il minotauro, l’ego è al centro di un enorme ed intricato labirinto nella nostra mente. Se siamo capaci di trovare questa bestia e ucciderla, saremo liberi delle catene che l’ego ha sulla nostra mente. La leggenda del minotauro e tanti altri miti mi ha auitato a superare tanti momenti dificili aiutandomi a capire che non ero l’unico a cui stavano capitando. Andando avanti ho sempre trovato mitologie che mi hanno aiutato a capire la posizione in cui ero. Mi hanno aiutato a trasformare il caos in ordine e a trovare un centro.
Mythology is like a religion to me. It is what all religions are based on. The idea of a myth is a story that helps you metaphorically understand how the universe operates. This is the main thing that everyone needs yet they don’t know how to make it happen, so they turn to religion. It is hard to be mortal, and myths are here to help us come to terms with the reality that we live in instead of mask the pains of life and give us false hope. All religions can be read metaphorically and interpreted like myth, but one of the main problems with religion is that it is only interpreted superficially and the meat of the myth that exists under the surface is totally forgotten. My favorite myth has to be the myth of the minotaur. The myth is about a king who wishes for a beautiful bull to win a competition with his brothers. Poseidon, the God of the sea, grants his wish. The king wins the competition, and instead of returning the beautiful bull back to Poseidon, his ego takes over and keeps it for himself. Poseidon does not like this and makes the bull fuck his wife. The minotaur which is half bull half human is born as a result of the king’s egotistical wants and needs. This bull is then imprisoned inside of a maze… I do not want to continue telling the myth because there are better versions that you can read. I originally read Joseph Campbell’s version which I highly recommend. Most myths have to deal with letting go of your ego. Ego separation is a natural process that is very difficult to go through. This is the process in your mind that starts to identify your “self” with nature versus the individual ego that is separate from nature. The minotaur is a representation of the ego that needs to be slayed to allow your true identity to shine. Like the minotaur, this ego is in the center of a huge elaborate maze of our minds. If we are able to find the beast and slay it, we will be free of the shackles that ego has on our mind. This myth of the minotaur and many other myths helped me through a lot of hard times that made me realize that I was not the only one that was going on this journey. As I went further, I would always find myths that helped me make sense of the position that I was at. It helped me turn chaos into order and find a center.
